Areas of Expertise

Special Education
Class composition is becoming more complex and has strained intervention resources at the school and district levels. Working within the financial constraints, our team will lead the inquiry to enhance positive academic and social emotional outcomes for students of autism, learning disabilities and severe behavioural challenges. Through Ross Green's model of Collaborative Problem Solving and the analogy that "Kids Do Well If They Can", we will celebrate structures and practices that have been successful and further delve into the 3 big-picture questions:

  • What is going on for learners?

  • How do we know?

  • Why does this matter?

Early Literacy
Reading is the foundation of academic success. As a principal in two diverse schools in the Okanagan, Rob has led unprecedented positive change in literacy achievement in his elementary schools. By examining a Response to Intervention (RTI) model, learn how to collaborate with district early literacy teams and school-based literacy leaders to transform student reading and writing results.

Kindergarten Transition Program
You never get a second chance at a first impression! As parents/caregivers, sending your four and five year old child to formalized schooling can be an exciting, anxious, and overwhelming time. Rob and his Early Learning Team at Pearson Road Elementary has led the highly successful "Hands-Up" program for the past four years that has revealed incredible results. We will give you the tools and framework to develop and implement your personalized kindergarten transition program.

Program Mission:

  • As an early learning team, we believe that we can find opportunities to build relationships and understand children’s needs prior to their entry into the public education system.

  • When we provide children with more opportunities to build relationships with our staff and each other and get familiar with the physical space of the building, they are more likely to be more confident learners when school starts in September

  • When we engage with parents and build our relationships as educational partners, students will more likely succeed at school.

  • Children have an opportunity to start their kindergarten transition in a very gradual way by only being away from their parent for a short time and only twice a week in May and June prior to their official enrollment in September.

Positives seen in September:

  • The children were excited to see the friends they had made at the Hands Up Program and parents were happy to see familiar faces (other parents and school staff)

  • The children that had attended the program had no issues with separating from their parents and no anxiety was seen.  We saw great excitement and comfort because the families were familiar with school building, routines and staff

  • Kindergarten classes were compiled with some back ground knowledge of the student strengths and areas of further support.

Testimonials

Testimonials

"This has really helped our daughter get a feel for what it will be like in kindergarten. She has an idea of what the kindergarten routine will be like and what the expectations are of her. She has had a chance to meet the kindergarten teachers and other children. I have seen her confidence increase and anxiety decrease when we talk about kindergarten in September. She is excited about starting school and that makes my husband and I feel so much better."

"We collaboratively have over 30 years' experience in teaching kindergarten. The Hands-Up Program was a game changer for us. We hit the ground running in September as we knew most of the kids and parents. The anxiety levels for parents and children who attended the program were non-existent. As a result, we were able to get right into the academics and were so further ahead"
